Berat’s Living Castle (Kalaja)
Unlike Western European castles preserved as sterile museum fragments, the citadel of Berat (Kalaja) remains a living residential township. High upon the rocky hill overlooking the Tomorr mountain range, roughly two hundred households still inhabit whitewashed stone compounds built within the 13th-century Byzantine walls.
The city’s strategic relevance was established by the Illyrians under the name Antipatrea, reinforced by the Byzantine emperor Michael I Komnenos Doukas, and subsequently adapted under Ottoman governors. Walking its steep polished alleys reveals hidden ecclesiastical treasures, most notably the Dormition of the Theotokos Cathedral housing the works of the 16th-century master painter Onufri.
Gjirokastër: The City of Slate and Skeletons
Further south along the Drino valley lies Gjirokastër, dominated by its monolithic fortress perched like a warship on the mountain ridge. The town’s domestic architecture consists of massive Ottoman-era kullë (tower houses) with roofs composed entirely of hand-cut limestone slate tiles.
The citadel itself features vaulted subterranean artillery galleries and cold isolation cells utilized successively by King Zog’s regime, the Axis occupation, and the post-war Enver Hoxha dictatorship. From its western ramparts, travelers look out onto the rugged Lunxhëri range, largely untrodden by mechanized tourism.
Ethos of the Inland Traverse
Approaching the Balkan interior requires patient navigation. Instead of fixed train schedules, travelers rely on regional minibuses (furgons), whose timetables fluctuate according to local market days and passenger volumes. This deliberate pace rewards visitors with an intimacy of hospitality—where a conversation over Turkish coffee and local quince preserves (gliko) opens access to centuries-old monastic keys.
